ACI (Autologus Chondrocyte Implantation)
New procedure used in the treatment of cartilage defect in joints, mainly the femoral and patellar articular cartilages in knee joint.
Its a 2 stage procedure. In the first stage, cartilage specimen is harvested from the knee joint of the patient. The procedure is usually done arthroscopically. The harvested cartlage specimen is then sent to a special lab where cartilage forming cells (Chondrocytes) are separated and grown in a lab. The period required for growing cells is about 2 months after which they are ready to be used in a patient.
In the second stage, patients own grown cartilage cells are implanted over the cartilage defect. This procedure can be done arthroscopically or with open surgery. This followed by non weight bearing mobilization and physiotherapy that goes for 2 months. A patient can resume his full sports activities at about 9 months.
Preffered treatment for Young patients. Minimally invasive, Daycare procedure.
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
This is a recent but under used procedure, where patients own blood components are used in the treatment of various injuries.
Human blood is a mixture of variety of cells, mainly, red blood cells (RBCs),white blood cells (WBCs) and platelets. Platelets form an integral part of blood clotting mechanism where sippage blood is stopped by a complex physiological procedure involving formation of blood clott.Platelets that form theses blood clotts also contain numerous growth factor, a property that can be used in treatment of injuries.
PRP is prepared by processing patients own blood whereby platelets are seperated from other cells and mixture of this platelets and plasma is injected in or around injured area. By this process, a high concentration of growth factors is attained which promotes healing.
