Robotic Joint Replacement

One of the frequently performed surgical procedure in recent times is knee replacement. The damaged knee surface known as cartilage is removed during a knee replacement and replaced with an implant. Whole knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and revision knee replacement surgery are the three main types of knee replacement procedures. With the development of technology, robotic assistance is now used during knee replacement surgery. More accuracy, enhanced safety, a reduced chance of postoperative complications and blood loss, and a quicker recovery period with effective physical therapy are all benefits of robotic knee replacement surgery. CUVIS joint, a fully automatic joint replacement surgery system, is the most advanced fully and active robotic joint replacement surgery system available at SaiShree hospital, Aundh, Pune. It is the first fully automated robotic system of western India.

FAQ's

Knee replacement, also referred to as knee arthroplasty, is an orthopaedic procedure that entails removing the knee’s deteriorated cartilage and replacing it with a prosthetic joint. The new joint, which is made of premium polymers and metal alloys, is intended to offer the stability, flexibility, and range of motion of a healthy, natural knee.

The robotics-enabled artificial intelligence helps achieve more precision and accuracy ensuring a well-balanced knee. It takes help of CT-Scan images to develop patient specific 3D bone models virtually. Thus if you see, in robotics method the surgery takes place 2 times, first time on laptop where the doctor plans the surgery with the help of CT-Scan images and the in the OT with the robot. The doctor feeds in the plan of the surgery in the robot and with utmost precision the robot takes all the bone cuts avoiding any complications. . It is often seen that; patients visit a hospital when the problem or pain has aggravated to an advanced osteoarthritis level. In such patients even 2 sub-millimeter of precision is of utmost importance. Which can be achieved by robotic surgery.

  • Less Surgical Time
  • Ensures faster Recovery
  • Surgical Accuracy
  • Consistent Results
  • Less Blood Loss
  • Faster Recovery

In conventional technique the surgeon performs the whole procedure himself without any computer or robot intervention. Whereas when compared to robotic surgery, the surgeon and robot work as team to perform the surgery. It is often seen that; patients visit a hospital when the problem or pain has aggravated to an advanced osteoarthritis level. In such patients even 2 sub-millimeter of precision is of utmost importance. Which can be achieved by robotic surgery.

Post operative protocols for conventional or robotic method more or less remain the same. With a little support patient is almost able to walk on the same day after surgery when performed with a CUVIS Robot.

Here are a few tips on preparing yourself for a better results post-surgery;

  • Install Fall Protection Tools
  • Establish a recovery area in the house
  • Seek assistance where ever needed
  • Have a bed that is at a height comfortable so that when you sit on the edge of the bed, your feet are on the
  • Although a hospital bed is not necessary, your mattress should be
  • Make sure you can access everything you need without having to bend or stand on tip toes.
  • Keep your phone on you always or nearby so in case of any emergency you can call for

Most of the joint replacement implants are compatible with robotic systems. Usually, these joint replacement implants are made of cobalt chrome material. There are certain implants which are quoted with special layers, which help in reducing the wear & tear of the implant and which helps in improving the life of that prosthesis. Thus osteoporosis (strength in the patient’s bone), deformity and age of the patients (whether the person having metal allergy) are some of the parameters which are considered before suggesting the implant to the patient who is undergoing joint replacement surgery.

Literature says that undergoing bilateral knee replacement surgery increases the risk of thrombosis and chances of morbidity is high. Although if a person is medical fit, then undergoing bilateral knee replacement surgery has its own benefits, like less hospitalization, single anesthesia, simultaneous physiotherapy for both knees & reduced medication.

This is a very important question, the chances are extremely low, but yes, they are there. So during the procedure the surgeon has to be vigilant & as the robot helps the Surgeon while performing the surgery the surgeon also has to make sure that all necessary steps are followed.

Thus our experience at SaiShree is, if all steps are taken properly, a robot making a mistake epically while using Active Robotics we have not yet come across such a case/scenario  during the procedure. This is what differentiates Active Robotics from Passive Robotics & that’s the importance of getting CT-scan preoperatively so the robot gets those additional information before procedure. And during the procedure actual information from the patient’s anatomy plus the  preloaded information regarding the CT images which makes the chances of the robot going wrong is quite low or next to ‘0’ as compared to other systems.
